Challenge
Underneath started as a passion project of Liam Randall, the author of Underneath. The book started as a poem written for the kids in their family and shares a journey on how trees not only communicate but build community.
Our challenge was to create a visual world that not only brought this story to life for the young ones in our lives, but for the adults who read them their bedtime stories.
Solution
We were inspired by classic children's books such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Where the Wild Things Are. We wanted to create a world that was beautiful and colorful, but also included hidden gems for parents and their kids to find together. Discovery more and more not only in the prose but in the pages, with each read.
Each scene is inspired by native Wisconsin plants and animals and shares the journey of the young protagonist wandering through the scenes.
