The Challenge

The Madison Doula Collective, originally launched in 2009, came to us at a pivotal moment: they were reimagining their entire structure and how they showed up in the world. The challenge was creating a brand that reflected both the diversity within their collective and the wide range of clients their doulas serve, all while completely breaking from the expected doula aesthetic.

They wanted energetic, bold, and empowering, not the soft pastels and script fonts that dominate the birth work space. How do you honor the intimacy of doula work while looking nothing like every other practice?

The Solution

We found the perfect symbol: cairn rock towers aka those stacked stone guides that help travelers navigate unfamiliar trails. That's exactly what doulas do: guide families through one of life's most transformative journeys. We designed a logo system that builds on this metaphor, balancing strength and care.

The broader visual identity does the same: bright, saturated colors grounded by warm neutrals; intimate black-and-white photography that centers real families; fluid, organic patterns that feel both energetic and tender. We delivered the full system—logo, assets, photography direction—through our Brand in a Week intensive, giving MDC a complete toolkit without stretching their community-based budget.
